irreconcilable differences

i’ve always thought i was the type of person that could be happy living in any major city, so long as the weather is decent. but i spent last weekend in l.a. - and hated it. it felt really cramped/concrete/transactional to me. the people (at least the ones i met) oozed pretention, at a very superficial level. like, are you seriously saying that outloud right now?

i guess you could say washingtonians are pretty pretentious too, but in their intensity/self-righteous. i love this city but i don’t see myself here for too much longer. i’m on the lookout for a new city. i’ve decided to strategically apply to grad schools in cities i want to live in for a few yrs (because it’s always a good life strategy to value ambiance over merit). the short list:

  • boston
  • san fran (despite disliking l.a., i really like san diego and northern ca)
  • raleigh/durham
  • seattle
